Every time I walk along Gerrard, the same walk I made each day going to high school, I would notice little changes; closed store front, new store, something demolished, something being built.
I don't quite remember what existed in the space that is now Madame Levant, an popular eatery specializing in Levantine cuisine. Prior to the pandemic, Madame Levant would be packed with weekend brunchers.
I had the spot on the list and finally went for brunch when the city started to open up, but at the time outdoor dining was only available. My brother and I made reservations and were seated on the sidewalk tables.
Top: Shakshouka ($18) - two poached eggs cooked in tomato sauce, green shutta and pita. Middle: Sujuk ($8) - beef sausages Bottom: Halawa Pancakes ($18) - gluten-free flour blend pancakes, orange blossom tahini maple syrup, pistachios and dried flower petals
The Halawa Pancakes is one of the popular menu item. It is a generous portion and I found it filling.
Reservations are highly recommended. I have not been inside, but I reckon it's not a large dining space.
