When he was reflecting on
the terrible events that took place in America
on September 11, 2001, Brian wrote this:

The Day After
It is always the same, the day after,
waking up bruised by the news of somebody else's pain.
Today, I tell myself, I shall do better.
I will hug my children a little bit tighter.
I will contact old friends, and tell them I miss them.
I will skip the bus and walk,
and when I am waiting in line for my coffee
I will ask the barista how her day is going.
I will sit in the park for a while and study the bees
as they go about their business.
I will think of my troubles
as nothing more than cake crumbs
to be brushed off an old favourite plate.
I will greet each new day with a smile
and be thankful for every last second of it.
This works for a while.
But then I forget until the next thing happens,
and I have to learn it over again.
