Known as the first plant-based Italian restaurant, Osteria Du on Queen West will be closing its doors in September, citing current economic times as a factor in closing.
Gin and Tonic ($13) - gin, classic or elderflower tonic, lime or grapefruit
We visited Osteria Du with some friends, whom one is vegan and wanted to try this spot out before they close. She has tried their plant-based pizzas before when they offered pick up during the pandemic.
Osteria Du offers a four-course prix fixe option ($50/person on weekdays, $60/person on Friday and Saturday), which is very decent value. It includes an appetizer, a pizza, a pasta and a dessert. Prices listed in this post is the a la carte pricing.
Fritto Funghi ($16) - lightly battered and fried oyster mushrooms, chilli pepper and pesto sauce
We found the fried mushrooms a little bland; the pesto sauce is on the bottom, it would have been nice if it was on the side for dipping.
Insalata Primavera ($17) - greens, peas, radish, tomato and onions, onion and lemon dressing
The salad however, was so much better than the fried mushrooms. It was a really good salad.
Canadian Deluxe ($20) - pepperoni, ground "meat" (soy and oats), green peppers, mushrooms, onions, cashew mozzerella and chilli oil.
In the prix fixe menu, they have selected pizzas you can choose, but you can sub in other options in the a la carte menu at no extra cost. We really enjoyed the pizza, the crust was light.
Cavatelli Arrabbiata ($23) - fresh cavatelli pasta, arrabbiata sauce made with house-made bomba (Italian chilis and sundried tomatoes), eggplant, basil and almond parmesan.
The cavatelli was really good, it had a bit of a kick, but nothing untolerable.
Wild Mushroom Ravioli ($25) - ravioli filled with mushroom, cauliflower and truffle paste, serve in a butter sauce with wild mushroom and truffle oil.
The ravioli was also good, but we preferred the cavatelli more.
Brownie Sundae ($11) - house made gelato, brownie crumble, toasted hazelnuts, chocolate sauce Tiramisu ($14) - sponge cake infused with coffee and creme de cacao, layered with vanilla cream cheese custard
The desserts were served in small, double-walled glasses, and was not too sweet. Simply nice finishers to a decent meal.
