By chance I found out that the word hypochondriac is not related to "hypo or hyper," but rather, it comes from the Greek word for abdomen (hypochondrium).
I see the mental image of someone holding their belly and saying they don't feel well – like we do in childhood, when stress arises.
In my image, those brainy ancient Greeks are standing around making fun of them ("you hypochondriac – get a life") – because they can't see anything wrong with the bellyaching person.
But I'd like to say, here and now, the bellyaching person feels what they feel, outside of anybody's judgement of them.
They know something's wrong.
They know they don't feel good.
They know they need to listen to their belly.
Their body is trying to tell them about the imbalance.
The Spirit infuses the Body, and if the Spirit ain't happy, the Body ain't happy.
It fascinates me that little kids (including myself at that age) tend to get a tummy ache when things feel difficult and stressful.
Stress gets translated into the body as pain and discomfort.
Stress is the root cause of virtually all disease.
The word dis-ease is a message to us, right?
We grow up, and our stress management changes.
We bury those tummy aches.
We get tough.
No whining.
But then, where do we hold our stress and tension?
In the shoulders, the top of the upper back.
Most people are tight here.
The more stress, the more stiffness in those muscles – some are as hard as rock.
(In my hospital job, I would casually massage co-workers to release that tension. Some didn't have fingertip space in all that rigidity.)
Guess which energy meridian runs through those tight muscles of the uppermost back and shoulders?
The Small Intestine.
The tummy meridian.
Isn't it remarkable that the tummy is still telling us about stress, no matter how tough we think we are?
In fact, the small intestine is one of the most sensitive areas in the whole body.
When we do massage or energy healing, the small intestine is the first to respond and communicate that relief is occurring.
How does it communicate?
Through stomach gurgles.
Ask any massage therapist, body worker, energy worker – when we hear those gurgles (a.k.a. borborygmus), we know we are on the right track, and the body is glad about what we're doing.
The body speaks its contentment through those gurgles, when we are giving it the relief it wants.
It seems to me, we need to relax enough that our tummy softens with real contentment, if we want to enjoy the best health.
That's my theory, anyhow.
Listen to the belly.
It tells the truth.
Call me crazy, but a sensitive hypochondriac may be more in touch with their Spirit than most of us are.
(This all resonates with Dr. Peebles' vital advice to Trust Your Gut - now, more than ever! It's uncanny that I was guided to write this post, prior to his recent message - who knew? )
