One of group of "dining out" friends lives in Lyttelton and she's always delighted when a Saturday night dinner is in her neck of the woods.
It's difficult to go past this restaurant for the freshness and quality of the fish. It's always busy, warm and inviting and the service is usually excellent. I think the person who waited on our table last night was new - or perhaps we were intimidating. The service simply wasn't as good as usual. And she didn't know the dishes. For example, she didn't know what the dips were on the platter of bread and dips. She was prepared to guess until the person who had ordered it, asked if she would go and find out.
I chose the Cajun Fish with gurnard which has become my standard request there. It comes with a mango salsa, kumara fries and a side salad. Sadly - for me - the salad this time was full of finely chopped cucumber (which I hate). 18 hours later, I'm still having unhappy returns of that.
The fish was delicious with the cajun spices. The kumara fries were also delicious.
There were 6 of us around the table last night which meant we could all talk with each other. This is always a bonus because often on our nights out, it's too noisy or we're too spread out to do so comfortably.
Service: 3/5 Food: 4.5/5 Ambience: 4/5 Total 11.5/15
