I started doing these challenges casually just to take the pressure off. I'm leaning even more into that now that I'm a mom. My son is very demanding of my attention these days. There's always so many of these I want to participate in but they aren't my biggest priority.
PopSugar 2022
Romance with a BIPOC author - Office Hours
Takes place during my favorite season - Horseman
About gender identity - Genderqueer
Office Hours was recommended to me from Beautifully Bookish Bethany on BookTube. Basically, it wasn't high literature but steamy. I like my romances to have sex so I was in. It was fun. Horseman was a very interesting sequel to the original fable. A fantastic spooky fall read. Genderqueer was very buzzy this year. Overall, I did about 50% of this challenge. Not great but not bad.
Book Riot 2022
Memoir of someone trans or NB - Genderqueer
Anthology with diverse voices - My Monster Boyfriend
Monster is an anthology with a solid mix of gender identities and couplings. This was a particularly bad year for me with this challenge so I'm throwing myself a bone (pun intended). I got about 25% for this challenge.
Reading Glasses Podcast 2022
Ask what someone is reading - Chihuahua Bookclub
Track my reading for a year - Storygraph
I was recently invited to join a bookclub from another Petstagram account. I'm counting it. I've been tracking my reading since I discovered GoodReads in 2009. I've still got GoodReads but Storygraph is where my focus really is.
I didn't read a self-help book and I didn't watch the adaptation of the one recent adaptation I've read. Overall, I still did well with this challenge. The podcast deliberately makes this easy to achieve which I appreciate.
Professional Book Nerds 2022
Deals with mental health - Gender Queer
Despite this one not being difficult, I just didn't nail it. I made progress on a book about Hedy Lamarr but had to drop it to listen to an audiobook about potty training my kid. They were very specific which is hard to hit without really trying. I got 5 out of 12 so less than 50%.
Books in the Freezer 2022
Nonhuman Monster - Into the Drowning Deep
I did pretty well on this one. There were books I wanted to do in each category but there wasn't enough time to get it all done. 66% is respectable.
I did pretty well on some challenges and poorly on others. As per usual, I completed none of them. You can't complete something like this without trying. Maybe I'll try harder into 2023. Maybe my kid will go full threenager and I'll just read whatever I want to maintain my sanity. Only time will tell.
