Bà Nội (which means grandmother in Vietnamese) is a micro-bakery that started out as a one-man operation in the neighbourhood of Bloorcourt, near Christie Pits Park.
Pre-orders are recommended, especially if items are made in limited quantities.
We dropped by the bakery late Summer when Jeff and I took a week off for a staycation. While we did not pre-order, we arrived an hour or so after opening on a weekday and they had stock of baked goodies. The exception of the chicken liver pate, which was not available.
Hot Dog Bun ($4)
The hot dog bun is a quintessential item in a Chinese bakery. Bà Nội's hot dog bun is a sausage wrapped in a milk bread dough, which is soft, yet rich.
Butter Tart ($9 for 3)
I got butter tarts for my brother and parents, since my brother is a a fan of butter tarts.
BBQ Pork Bun (cha siu bao, $6)
Another quintessential Chinese bakery item is the BBQ pork bun. Bà Nội's BBQ pork bun is made from scratch from the milk bread dough to the pork filling. The pork is marinated for a few days then slow roasted and basted with honey and the marinade.
