On Sunday the 11th of September I celebrated my very first Onam.
Onam is an annual Hindu cultural festival, in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the official festival of the state and includes a wide variety of cultural events.
I was asked by a friend if I wanted to join her and to celebrate Onam with her, this was an honour to do, firstly to see and experience Onam and secondly to celebrate it with her and everyone there.
I didn't take many photos as there were family with kids there, but I will describe my experience with you.
What to Wear
Over the past few years I have gained a lot of Indian and Pakistani friends, though more from the region of Kerala.
I have purchased a few Kurta's so I knew I would be ok clothing wise for todays event.
What Happens Next
Now on arrival the only thing I knew was there would be family's here, and at some point I would be eating a Sadhya.
Sadhya is a meal in Kerala that consists of a mix of traditional vegetarian dishes usually served on a banana leaf and normally ate with your right hand.
I have not really had a lot of experience eating with my hands apart from burgers, chicken wings and fries etc and I saw one of the parts was rice.
Challenge Accepted
I sat down and thought "this is going to be fun" now it was time to sneakily watch what others were doing and copy as best I could. Yes I was offered a spoon but I wanted to do it the traditional way, more so since I was the only white guy here today (I am used to that now)
Other Activates
Apart from the meal, there were other activities that everyone could watch. These included a few solo songs and dances performed by the people here today.
Yeah I didn't understand a word that was said, but I listen to a lot of music in different languages and I really enjoyed it.
Overall
Overall this was a great day out, and I loved seeing, hearing and eating new things.
I loved celebrating this event with everyone today and also honoured I could celebrate it with my friend.
