"human beings are destined to destroy themselves" there is nothing more true to this statement than the hundreds of inhumane ways they treated people in concentration camps, one of the famous ones being Auschwitz. Hunger was widespread and prevalent, resulting in a reduction in life expectancy and millions of deaths every year. If you are a lucky prisoner, you might have 3 meals a day but for most, even one in a day was a blessing, just enough to keep you alive and some received nothing at all. Rotten vegetables and meat were the norms. Many of them died from weakness after spending several weeks in the camp, eating little and suffering diarrhea and crippling abdominal pain. Let's look at some of the foods they ate:
1) Mashed potatoes
mashed potatoes
Forget about your mama's delicious mashed potatoes with sweet toppings, well, this one was blunt, water and sometimes salt was added in for flavor and that was pretty much it. and as always, they ration it, this was one way they exploited inmates for labor. the mashed potatoes were mainly served for dinner.
2) Coffee
coffee
For breakfast, some liquid that resembles coffee was served. It consisted of boiled water infused with an herbal brew, "tea," which was a grain-based alternative to coffee and no sugar or any type of sweetener was added. one of the drinks that caused massive diarrhea among inmates.
3) Soup
Soup
For lunch, it was soup, if you don't like it, starve! It contained potatoes, turnips, groats, rye flour, and Avo food extract in small amounts. It was so unappetizing that newly arrived prisoners avoided eating it or munched it only out of disgust. It was common practice for individuals to play a game in order to get the soup at the bottom of the barrel because it was thick and bearable to eat.
4) Black bread
Black Bread
For dinner, black bread. In addition, a tablespoon of marmalade or cheese was served with a few grams of sausage or margarine. Even though the famished prisoners usually devoured this entire portion at once, this bread was meant to last for the following morning.
5) Meat
stew
If it was one of those lucky days, meat was served and a lot of the time, inmates used to exchange it for a service of something else. Was dropped in soup to make something human to eat. Whether rotten or fresh, it was food. one of the main reasons inmates had diarrhea, stomach ache and vitamin deficiencies.
6) Porridge
porridge
For women who are expecting or have delivered, porridge was the meal. Better yet, if they were carrying one of the officer's children, the treatment was a little bit better,4 or more meals a day, porridge included. Getting food, eating food, and stealing food was the norm, pregnant or not.
7) Mushroom soup
mushroom soup
In some concentration camps during mushroom season, mushroom soup was readily available and as you can imagine, it was disgusting. add in some sea salt and that was it. Food rations at these concentration camps were extremely minimal, containing virtually no protein, hardly any vitamins or fats, and often causing diarrhea. There were approximately 800 to 1500 calories per day in this entire ration.
8) Cabbage
cabbage
For a nutritional vegetable, cabbage was the answer in some concentration camps. as you guessed it by now, fast and easy to cook, just add in lots of water and some sea salt and that was pretty much it. The level of readiness depends on the chef's mood that day. For the prisoners, at least it was something to hold the stomach and keep that cannibalistic instinct away.
9) Beans
Beans
It was more of two pieces of beans in a whole liter of hot seawater. Sometimes butter was added for some flavor but still, it was that bad. For inmates, it was something to fill the belly with. Just forget about the stomach ache and farting after. The level of softness also depends on the chef.
10) Dried fish
dried fish
Dried fish bones to be exact and just like every meal that was 99% water and 1% actual food, the dried fish was no exception, for those camps that were along waterways like rivers or lakes, dried fish bones were sometimes served during fishing season. For prisoners/inmates, this was a huge diet change and a more welcomed balanced diet. Was served with cabbage if they were lucky.
Food for thought
Life in concentration camps was hell on earth. Inmates had to deal with severe hunger and malnutrition every day and protect their rations as well as access basic human needs like shelter to survive. The prisoner was given just enough to keep them alive and were massively exploited, free labor and organ donation was prevalent.
Getting food, eating food and stealing food were the norm. coffee, soup and bread were a staple,99% water, 1% solid food, and 3 meals a day were a blessing, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Vitamins and fats were scarce, and diarrhea was common. The total daily calorie content of this ration ranged between 800 and 1500 calories. Each week, this rate of depletion resulted in weight loss of 2 to 4 kilos (4.4 to 8.8 pounds). Over time, these meager rations destroyed the health of the prisoners. As a result, they became more susceptible to various diseases and infections. It remained a common goal of all inmates to avoid starvation, eat anything and everything available, even the insects in their cells. Millions upon millions of deaths every year. food keeps us alive and healthy.
