First up - The 6" SRK - try not to get too excited over the deluxe blister packaging . . .
The worst part of blister packaging is getting the stuff out!
6" SK-5 Carbon Steel Clip Point Blade - nice belly on it to make everyday slicing jobs nice and easy and the Kray-Ex ( think a "fancy" rubber ) handle gives you a good grip as well as no harborage areas for food particles so camp clean up is easy . . .
Plenty sharp out of the package - ready for tinder / kindling prep - food prep - the blade is .20 / fifth of an inch thick - at first glance you would think it would be blade or front heavy but it balances pretty good in the hand - I personally would use a smaller knife for delicate / fine cutting tasks - but that's my preference . . .
Comes with Cold Steel's locking sheath - you grip it by the handle and pop it out by pushing on the sheath with your thumb while pulling on the knife - simple and effective - also has a snap lock strap that goes around the handle.
And the sheath can be used just about anyway you can think of - on your belt you can carry either left or right - edge forward or to the rear - either way either side - and you don't have to slide it on your belt - pull the velcro apart and unsnap it and you can slip it under your belt - on or off easy and simple - molle system? - sure - lash it on a pack with paracord? - yep - use it just like it is and stash 6 or 8 feet of paracord on it? - why not? You never know when a little extra paracord could come in handy . . .
The knife by itself is about is about 7.6 oz - at least on my scale . . .
Knife with sheath gets across the scale at about 10.7 oz . . .
On to the Cold Steel Recon Tanto - a little more upscale - it comes in a box - LOL!
It is the same basic knife except it comes with a 7" Tanto blade - and a different feel altogether with it - it is a little blade heavy - a lot less belly so the "food prep usage" side of things would be a little less convenient - but the tinder / kindling prep side of the equation? Oh Hell Yes! The biggest issue I would see with it is cutting / chopping tasks that would be far better served with a machete or an axe or hatchet you would be tempted to just keep on dancing with this knife . . .
The 7" Recon Tanto comes with the same - do just about any which thing you can think of - sheath as the SRK . . .
Weight wise you get up over 1/2 lb for the knife - you gotta pay for that extra 1" of blade somewhere!
And just under 3/4 lb for the knife and sheath . . .
So here we are at the bottom of the post - the bottom line so to speak - Which one?
Come on folks - I am an enabler - if you can't decide - buy them both! - See - wasn't that easy? - LMAO!
But seriously - for all around "camping" use the 6" SRK would be a good choice, simply because with the belly on it it is a better food prep choice - and plenty stout enough for just about everything short of needing an axe / hatchet / bow saw - but - the 7" Recon Tanto is one really good chopper but the food prep / slicing side of the house takes a little bit of a hit with it - Bruce - Which ONE? - The 6" SRK if I had to pick just one - happy now? . . .
