If you want a tasty yet easy recipe to serve for lunch or dinner here is the solution. It is a very tasty recipe as shrimp is used in it. I prefer to prepare with a thick gravy, as I normally serve this with rice. You can prepare a dry version to serve with roti/chapatti too.

Ingredients:

  • Gati Kochu / Colocasia / Taro – 6-8 nos
  • Potato – 1 (Medium)
  • Tomato – 1 (Medium)
  • Onion – 1 (Medium)
  • Ginger Paste – 1 ½ tsp
  • Garlic – 2-3 cloves
  • Shrimp – 150 gms (Shelled)
  • Cumin Powder – ½ tsp
  • Coriander Powder – ¼ tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
  • Red Chilli Powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – To taste
  • Garam Masala Powder – ½ tsp
  • Mustard Oil – 3 Tbsp
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Bay Leaf – 1 no
  • Dry Red Chilli – 2 nos
  • Sugar – ½ tsp (Optional)

Steps:

  1. Wash both 'kochu' and potato. Peal the skin of both Potato and taro. Cut them in quarters lengthwise. Cut potato lengthwise.  Do not wash taro after pealing. Sprinkle a little turmeric powder and salt on taro and leave for 15-20 minutes.

  3. Finely chop onion. Separately prepare grind ginger and tomato.
  4. Heat oil in a kadai and fry 'kochu' till they turn golden brown. Take out from kadai and keep aside. Likewise fry the potatoes too and keep aside.
  5. Now put the marinated shrimps too. Lightly fry them and take out from kadai.
  6. If required put 1 tsp mustard oil in kadai. Add 1 tsp ghee in kadai. Temper with bay leaf, cumin seeds and whole red chilli.
  7. When aromatic put in sliced onion in kadai. Fry till they turn translucent. Now add crushed garlic clove and ginger paste. Fry till raw smell goes off.
  8. Now add tomato paste along with dry spices except garam masala powder. Put a little salt and sauté the 'masala' till oil separates.
  9. Now put fried taro, potato and shrimp. Mix everything very well.
  10. Pour 1 cup hot water and cover the kadai. Cook till taro is done.
  11. Add sugar and garam masala powder. If you wish you may add a little ghee again at this point.
  12. Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

~ You can prepare a vegetarian version of this recipe too by omitting shrimp and garlic in the curry.
