I love dining on The Terraces (the Strip) because it's always buzzing with people and so there's lots o people watching ("whatever was she thinking when she decided to come out in that"), and bemoaning the fact that young people don't get dressed up to go out these days. But also there's a vibe about the area that isn't as tangible in any other part of the city on a Saturday night.

As we were dining at Original Sin, it behoved us to visit King Kong first for a cocktail. Jane and I arrived to find a sign "Private Function" blocking the entrance and started to walk away. However, one of the lovely servers rushed up to us and said that he could always find room for the "Bad Girls Club". (That's what my favourite mask has on it.) So we signed in, and were escorted to a table. We also told him that there were 2 others joining us who were part of the Bad Girls Club (and texted Barbara as to the password to get it).

I had a Bourbon Smash which was delicious. It was really tangy with a great citrus hit. We were chatting away, when a young woman moved in to talk to her friends at the adjacent table. She was wearing a fabulous skirt, and so Barbara made a comment to her about it. She swung around and told us about the skirt, what she's doing in Christchurch (the end of her first year at university studying engineering), and asked us questions about how we'd met, what we'd been up to, what we did. Absolutely delightful. We were sad we had to go to dinner.

Some of the group were already seated at our table when we arrived, and we all quickly got ourselves sorted out with drinks and settled down for a pleasant evening.

Original Sin used to be a silver service restaurant, and I remember the last time we ate there commenting to the maitre d' that what had made them change as it now has an Italian menu. I was told that the young people who tend to inhabit the area just weren't into silver service (and the price thereof) and so they had had to change to meet the demands of the clientele in the area.

At my table, most people chose pasta - and all said it was delicious. The pizza was really good too.

I chose the Insalata - salad which was really a sort of Caesar salad but without the anchovies,

It was a huge bow of lettuce, crisp pancetta, crunchy croutons, lots of shaved parmesan and chicken, dressed with an amazingly and unexpectedly spicy sauce. I think it may have had cayenne pepper in it, but I am not at all useful when it comes to picking out the specific spices in a dish. It was absolutely delicious. And just for the record, I wasn't able to finish it.

It was a lovely evening. We were almost able to talk to everyone around the table (although at a rectangular table of 8, that wasn't really possible for the people at the extremities). The service was good (but not great. Water please . . . and those who ordered coffee had to wait an unreasonably long time for them).
