These cute ghosts are a sweet bread with a vanilla flavour, both an ideal treat and activity for children. You can make them with a sweet glaze or without, they are delicious both ways.

Halloween is almost upon us and when I saw some adorable ghost buns in a free cooking magazine, I had to try. I used my own sweet bread recipe (if it ain't broke) and freestyled shape as well as decoration. How they made the shape is still beyond me and someone ate all my raisins I wanted to use for eyes and mouth. Overall they came out great, right?

Fluffy Vanilla Ghosts

Yield: 6 small or 3 medium sized ghosts Difficulty: 2/5 Time: about 20 minutes overall prep + time to prove + 20 minutes baking time

Ingredients:

  • 500 gr All-purpose flour
  • 20 gr fresh baker's yeast dry active yeast
  • 75 gr Sugar
  • 50 gr Butter (alternative: vegetable Margarine)
  • 300 ml Milk (alternative: almond milk)
  • 7 gr Salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste
  • a splash of milk (almond milk) to wash the dough before baking
  • raisins, chocolate chips or black icing for eyes and mouth
  • ½ cup powdered sugar for glaze

Instructions:

  1. Knead all the ingredients into a smooth dough. Keep kneading it for at least 10 minutes with the dough hook attachment.
  2. Leave dough to prove until it has doubled in size.
  3. Punch the air out of the dough and knead it. Separate into 3 or 6 equal parts.
  4. Shape each ghost by making a small ball of dough for the head and shaping the leftover dough into an oval. Make a 45 degree cut on both sides and shape the arms. Cut halfway down the middle to form legs and twist them around each other. Place on a lined baking sheet with space to prove and curl the twisted bottom a little to one side. Leave it to prove for another 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  6. If you want to glaze them add facial features later, otherwise add raisins or chocolate chips for the facial features and wash the top with some milk.
  7. Bake them for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. For the glaze mix powdered sugar with a splash of milk and brush over the warm ghosts. Add facial features onto the glaze. If you are using icing, wait for them to cool completely before adding the icing or it will melt off.

Well, there you have an easy recipe for fluffy vanilla ghosts. They are very delicious and fun to make. My niece loves them and she is a very picky eater. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this recipe and have a spooky day. Happy Halloween!
