Another quarter down so it seems a good time to update my casual progress. Being a mood reader means I'm a little all over the place in my choices so it will be interesting to see how that shakes out.
2021 Challlenge
Collecting Dust - Cosmic Love
Translation - Winter in Sokcho
Cosmic Love is a short comic anthology inspired by Florence + the Machine songs. I liked it but wanted a little bit more. It was very short and hard to tell which songs were attached to which stories. Sokcho is one of those beautifully written literary fictions where I feel like I'm missing something.
PopSugar Challenge
Seen on someone's shelf - Winter in Sokcho
Book everyone but you has read - The Proposal
Longest Book - The Pants of Perspective
Meant to read in 2020 - Dead Voices
TBR book associated with a favorite person, place etc. - Upwards
Free TBR book - The Guest List
I discovered Sokcho via BookTube and saw it on his shelf so I'm counting it. I was very late to the party with Jasmine Guillory so it definitely feels like everyone read her early books but me. I truly have no idea what my longest book is but Pants was a helluva lot longer than I expected and GoodReads said it would be. Voices is the sequel to a spooky middle grade book I read last year. I wanted to read it last winter but last winter was insane for me. Upwards is the memoir of someone thru-paddling the northern forest canoe trail. Early in the trail, the author goes through the same small town my extended ILs go to every summer. Pity I liked the book less than the place. Guest was a free library book and a very effective thriller.
Book Riot Challenge
Non-European in translation - Winter in Sokcho
LGBTQ+ history - People in Pride RuPaul Charles
Historical fiction with POC protagonist - Ring Shout
Set in Midwest - Mean Girls: Senior Year
I'm reaching by including a board book I read to my kid but I'll take it. Is Shout both historical and genre fiction? Yes. Am I counting it? Absolutely. I'm honestly surprised I got this many checked off on accident.
Reading Glasses
Figure out your wheelhouse - Here
Microhistory - Chesapeake Requiem
Chesapeake is about the history and perilous future of the vanishing island of Tangier.
Books in the Freezer
Themed Anthology - Worst Laid Plans
Pink or blue cover - Survive the Night
Plans is a short anthology from and indie horror publisher I discovered on Bookstagram. Survive is the latest offering by Riley Sager. Great plot, mediocre execution.
The 52 Book Club
Related to the word Fire - A Fire Story
Book mentioned in another book - AWOL on the Appalachian Trail
Multiple character POV - The Guest List
Includes a historical even you know nothing about - Chesapeake Requiem
Similar title to another book - Red Widow
Country starting with S - Winter in Sokcho
Alternative history - Ring Shout
Found via Bookstagram - The Taking of Jake Livingston
Shoe on the cover - The Pants of Perspective
Fire is the graphic memoir of someone who lost their home to a California wildfire. AWOL is mentioned in a few other thru-hiking memoirs. Widow is an excellent spy thriller set in the DC area written by a native. Jake sees dead people. Great concept but didn't love the execution. Pants is meant to be the author's lower half so I'm counting it. I checked off a lot more here than I expected to.
Pro Book Nerds
Unfortunately, I had nothing to check off here. I like the idea behind their 'read a cookbook, try a recipe' one but I dislike cooking so that will almost definitely not be happening.
