You can buy a whole set of knives if you want to and make your kitchen pretty but you'll most likely be using one or two, make sure these two are well-taken care of, i.e. washed daily or anytime you want to cut up different ingredients and sharpened, one of which MUST be a Chef's knife. When it comes to cutting boards, use one with a non-skid back, if you don't have one of those, put a wet paper towel underneath to avoid slipping. If you don't have good knife skills, practice, soon enough all your wonderful recipes will come together faster and more perfect than the last. Three is enough, for poultry, meat and another for fruits and vegetables.

7) Over Crowding the pan is a huge NO NO

Do not put too much food on the pan, sautéing, pan-frying, or roasting. Perfectly cooked on the inside and brown on the outside, this is what you want to end up with, when you crowd the pan, a lot of steam is produced hence you'll end up with soggy food. Skillet or sheet pan, make sure there is little room, single layer spread-out instead of stacking them up. If you lack enough room, cook in a batch or different pans.
