SERVE YOUR MASTER
Romans 13:1-8 (5) - Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. (NIV)
Elisha diligently served Elijah till he got the double portion of his anointing (2 Kings 2:1-15). During his prime, Elisha had a servant (Gehazi) who ought to possess his mantle. However, Gehazi's greed robbed him of what could have made him twice powerful as Elisha (2 Kings 5:20-27). Gehazi could have performed two-fold of his master's miracles just as Elisha did exactly double Elijah's exploits.
"Gehazi would have been a quadruple of Elijah (Elijah x 4), but he lost it and was leprose."
The story of Gehazi sums up Judas Iscariot's attitude when he betrayed Christ for 30 pieces of silver (Luke 22). Do you know the Bible had labelled Judas a 'thief' even before he betrayed Jesus? In John 12, after Mary had anointed Jesus' feet with expensive oil, Judas said: "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages." (vs 3-5). But verse 6 clarifies that Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he lusted after the money.
Nowadays, people desire to be powerfully used by God, yet they are unwilling to pay the price. Several aspiring youths and assistants to worthy leaders have mixed their paths due to their anti-Christ-like behaviours. They are arrogant, unbending and emerge before they become mature because they fail to heed Paul's admonition in our Bible reading that we must respect authority. There is a process in everything; even when Christ said, 'greater works than this shall you do' (John 14:12), there are more to it—in the preceding verses, Jesus stressed the unity between Him and His Father (vs 9-11).
Beloved, before you get to the level God intends for you, you must smoothen your bonding with Him and serve your superiors diligently. Don't be like Gehazi and Judas, who found themselves on the negative side of history through greed. What are your weak points? Correct them and fearfully work out your salvation with obedience (Philippians 2:12). You shall be rewarded!
PRAYER
Hymn: Trust and Obey — John H. Sammis (1887)
1. Father, help me never to overlook the defining processes and moments of my life.
(MIDNIGHT PRAYER)
1. Every mandate of hell to make me fall and fail, scatter by fire!
2. As I step into the 'Ember Months', Lord Jesus, please honour yourself in my life.
3. Lord, terminate pride, greed, lusts and anxiety in my life and let the Holy Spirit dwell in me afresh.
CONGRATULATIONS
