Respect is a movie about Aretha Franklin. It starts off with her as a young girl growing up in the control of a dominating Baptist minister - father, and moves on to the abusive control of a husband, to the liquid control of a bottle of booze, until eventually she finds her real self - according to this movie with God (just like a good southern Baptist girl).

The music is amazing - Jennifer Hudson (chosen by Aretha to play her) belts out the songs of gospel, R&B and anything else. But it's the personal struggle behind the music that makes this movie credible.

It ends with Aretha herself on stage in Madison Square Garden

I enjoyed the music, but I thought the story telling was lacking in fire. I also felt that at almost 2.5 hours, the movie was too long. Perhaps the story would have benefited from a tighter time-frame and script.
