Having followed the journey of pharmacist turned pastry chef, Christopher Siu from his appearance on MasterChef Canada season 2 and being the winner of MasterChef Canada season 7, Daan Go (cake in Chinese) Cake Lab is fruit of Chef Siu's success.

Daan Go Cake Lab is known for their character macarons, cute pastries and award-winning HK milk tea. There are several locations throughout the GTA; the Kensington Market location is the closest to me.

HK Milk Tea ($4.75)

Jeff and I love HK milk tea, it is a drink we order whenever we see anywhere offering it. A good HK milk tea has a good balance of black tea and evaporated milk, a little sweetness and smoothness from constant straining through a fine cloth filter that resembles a silk stocking, which is why HK milk tea is also know as "silk stocking milk tea".

Daan Go's milk tea is made with evaporated milk and their special black tea blend. There is a good balance of tea and sweetness, and it is a smooth tea.

The character macarons are cute! Price-wise, they are slightly on par with other macarons in the city. They have about 18 characters/flavours to choose. We got:

  • Koala - Vietnamese coffee
  • Lucky Cat - White Peach
  • Panda - Roasted Milk Tea
  • Bunny (?) - Earl Grey
  • Frog - Pandan Coconut
  • Octopus - Black Sesame

Flavour-wise, they are ok. Not too sweet and I like that there's Asian flavours, but I still prefer Ladurée macarons.

Cake Box

Aside from whole cakes, Daan Go also offers slices, which makes it easier to try them all.

The Peach Garden has white peach gelée, yellow peach mousse, peach jam, osmathus jelly and an almond crunch base. If you love peach, you'll like this cake. It's peachy, and not too sweet.

The Matcha Crepe Cake is made of layers of thin crepe and matcha ganache. It is a thicker crepe cake than what I've had before. However, if you love matcha, you may like this cake.
