In this video, we're going to talk about a powerful mitochondrial protector called AMPK.
AMPK stands for 5'adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase.
AMPK is known as the guardian of your metabolism. It's the central regulator of energy homeostasis.
Homeostasis is your body's ability to adapt to the external environment.
For example, if you're running up a flight of stairs, your pulse rate will increase to adjust for the need for oxygen in your brain, so you don't pass out.
AMPK is an enzyme that adapts to things that deplete your cellular energy.
This enzyme senses a drop in energy (ATP) and adapts the mitochondria, helping it work efficiently to increase the chance of survival.
It does this by increasing ATP production (the body's energy currency) and lowering ATP consumption.
Autophagy is another important part of this process. Autophagy is when your body recycles old and worn-out cell parts and turns them into new cells.
AMPK triggers autophagy, mitophagy (recycling of mitochondria), and xenophagy (the removal of intracellular pathogens).
AMPK also happens to suppress tumors, fight against cancer cells, reduce the risk of diabetes, and help protect against a fatty liver.
How to boost AMPK:
• Low-carb diet
• Hypoxia
• Exercise
• Fasting
• Metformin (not a recommendation)
• Polyphenols
• Resveratrol (red grapes)
• Green tea
• Berberine
• Curcumin
• Ginseng
• Alpha-lipoic acid
