| The 14th-century bell tower of Alt Grauen/Curon is a sad reminder of what was sacrificed when the lake resia was flooded for a damn. The villagers were forcibly displaced when the damn was surprisingly flooded before the official start of the project in August 1949. It is said, that the farmhouses smelled like rot after what the Italians had done. Soon after the houses and church were blasted with dynamite, only the tower was left as a grim daily reminder. In July 1950, it was all done and there was no way back. Some locals settled around the lakes, many fled to Austria as refugees. The area had been annexed by Italy after the first world war from Austria. Today, south Tyrol is bilingual, German and Italian.
